Nestled just 45 minutes West of Vienna, the stage upon which this vinous drama unfolds, is a tapestry of undulating landscapes and sun-soaked slopes, where Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Zweigelt reign supreme. It is a canvas that Matthias Warnung paints with the strokes of passion and reverence, capturing the essence of the region in each bottle.
The soils in Kamptal are diverse, but there is a prevalence of loess and primary rock soils. These soil types contribute to the unique mineral character of the wines produced in the region. Influenced by the Danube River and the surrounding hills, the region has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Subject to the binary effects of the hot, Pannonian plain heat from the east and the cooler Waldviertel region towards the north-west. The unique combination of warm days and cool nights contributes to the fine aromatics and naturally-retained vibrant acidity in the finished wines.
Matthias organically farms 10 hectares of vines across the region, inheriting his duties & cellar from his father in 2010 after spending time working with various other winemakers, most notably the famed visionaries behind Testalonga, Craig Hawkins & Tom Lubbe of Matassa. He is not dogmatic, but a possibilist, exploring his own path whilst remaining very focused - looking for vivid acidity and a linear dimension in his wines, complemented by long oxidative maturation phases in gargantuan oak vessels. In his highly atmospheric, 500 year old underground cellar lies a slew of 6000L + 8000L foudres which benefit the complexity in his wares with the humid and cool conditions slowing the evaporation & oxidation of untopped wines.
