2021 Konpira Maru Whitlands Pinot Noir12113
WINEMAKER: Alistair Reed & Sam Cook
REGION: Whitlands, VIC
VARIETAL: Pinot Noir
This Pinot Noir, fully wild fermented, is for us our favoured expression of this mighty pain in the arse of a grape. Restrained tannin allowing the pinot to show its true self, all with a lovely bead of cool climate acid.
Celeste vineyard, Whitlands, King Valley, Victoria, Red ferrosol soils. Wild fermented under the pine trees (al fresco) next to the vineyard in 500L tubs. Gentle daily plunging to aid extraction of the soft tannins but to retain the forest floor/briar tones that make this such a classic pinot. 2 week fermentaion on skins and then basket-pressed just before ferment finishes. Settled on the vineyard and then racked and transported back to our Melbourne headquarters. Transfered to 90% old french oak and 10% new and left for 9 months, with regular topping. Racked from barrel into tank for the final blend and then bottled unfined and unfiltered with the only addition being a touch of sulphur.
A subtle and elegant Pinot, one for the purists. Black forest fruits and forest undergrowth which will open in the glass over time. Light and delicate but with concentration coming through in the mid palate and a persistent finish. Best enjoyed with pork neck steak, grilled brussel sprouts with a light cranberry jus.
The name Konpira Maru has something to do with a fishing trawler and a heroin syndicate. You'd have to ask Al and Sam about that. What we do know is they're seriously good at making wine. Minimal intervention, maximum care.
