2021 Jilly Wine Co. Lone Ranger Nebbiolo

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo
REGION: New England, NSW
VITICULTURE: Organic
WINEMAKER: Jared Dixon
Topper’s Mountain Vineyard in New England. Organically farmed and situated inland from Coffs Harbour in northern NSW. The vines sit roughly 900m asl in deep, free-draining red volcanic soils called Krasnozems. Cool, continental climate.
Limited info available for local vintage conditions. However, the Australian 2021 vintage is being described as a ‘unicorn’ vintage because of the rare combination of events leading to both exceptional quality and a good crop size. “Good fruit set, plenty of water at the right time, lack of heatwaves, low disease pressure, and favourable harvest conditions have resulted in a high-yielding, high quality vintage,” - Wine Australia General Manager, Rachel Triggs.
Nebbiolo hand-picked at 12 baumé, destemmed for wild fermentation in stainless steel with gentle daily hand plunging. Tank then sealed for 4-week post-fermentation maceration before transfer to 3rd and 4th use French oak. Unfined, unfiltered.
New England is unlike any other and much of this is due to the region’s diversity. Ranging from high altitude (1000m above sea level), cool climate vineyards along the spine of the Great Dividing Range, to the lower and warmer sites on the western edges of the New England Tablelands.
